Friday Five - 24/02/17

The Friday Papers  –

This week I have been researching foot and lower limb strength and its effect on balance on mobility. These attributes are key to the skills of the martial artist. Here is one of the studies focused on ‘balance training’.

“However, lower-extremity resistance training conducted on even and uneven surfaces meaningfully improved proxies of strength, power and balance in all groups.”

Inspired words -

Dominic Cruz was on the Joe Rogan experience podcast this week and for the older athlete like myself his stories of overcoming injury were inspiring to say the least.

“Infuse heart, soul, spirit and passion because Talent is not enough.”

Dominick Cruz

Foody Friday -

Eat the Beets. Beetroot Juice has undergone a systematic review for its performance enhancing benefits:

“In addition to improving efficiency and performance in various time trials or increasing time-to-exhaustion at submaximal intensities, chronic supplementation with beetroot juice may improve cardiorespiratory performance at the anaerobic threshold and VO2max intensities.”

From the world of MA’s – GSP Returns

George Saint-Piere has returned to MMA after a 4 year break and he looks as good as ever! Could we see a GSP vs Connor McGregor fight in the future? It is already being talked about in MMA circles and would certainly be a serious draw for the UFC fans.

“It was rarely the techniques that impressed me when I met the Elite Martial Artists of various styles. It wasn't what they did ... it was how they did it! It was they 'felt' ... their highly developed  power, accuracy, subtly. When I realised this, I knew my training had to be focused on those things, not just techniques. "
